The Personnel Cabinet's Office of Diversity & Equality is excited to invite all senior management staff, EEO & ADA Coordinators, EEO Counselors and HR Practitioners to the 25th Annual Governor’s EEO Conference. 

The Governor’s Office and Personnel Cabinet continue to realize the important role the conference plays within state government by providing some of the necessary training for HR management teams in the areas of EEO and Diversity. Trainings at this year's conference will include topics on gender and generational communication, the changing demographics of the Commonwealth, how to properly conduct investigations, the veterans hiring preference, methods for conflict resolution and, of course, EEO legal updates. 

Registration will open September 6 and will be accessible via the link below.  Attendance at this year's conference will be capped at 250, so please do not hesitate to register.

A.  "What Did You Say?" Communicating in a Multi-Generational Workforce

Workshop Description:  When you take members of different generations, blend them together, and ask them to work side-by-side, you have both an opportunity and a challenge: a chance to engage a mix of people who bring their unique skills and experience to an organization and the challenge of managing the generational differences that distinguish them.

B.  Census 2010:  Race & Ethnicity in Kentucky

Presenter: 
Michael Price, State Demographer, Kentucky Data Center

Workshop Description:  This session looks at the demographics of race and ethnicity in Kentucky.  The 2010 Census and vital statistics are analyzed to examine recent trends in the growth, distribution, and composition of racial and ethnic groups.

C.  How the Veterans Preference Benefits the Commonwealth

Presenter: 
Reginald Youngblood, Office of Employment & Training

Workshop Description:  This session will assist you in recruiting, evaluating and selecting qualified talent from a diverse population within the ranks of today’s Military.  Participants will examine the reasons Military Veterans make great hires; accelerated learning curve, leadership, teamwork, diversity & inclusion in action, efficient multitasking, respect for procedures, understanding of technology and globalization, integrity, conscious of health and safety standards, and triumph over adversity.

D.  Investigations:  How to Do It Right the First Time

Presenter:
Dinah Bevington, General Counsel, Personnel Cabinet

Workshop Description:  Conducting an investigation is not easy and early missteps can create later hardships.  This session will provide an overview of proper investigation procedures and a discussion of effective investigation techniques with the Personnel Cabinet's General Counsel. 

E.  Resolving Conflict:  Kentucky Employee Mediation Program, Workplace Resolutions & the Personnel Board

Presenters:

Workshop Description:  This session will provide an overview of the Mediation and Workplace Resolutions programs.  The session will also include a mock mediation and information on the Personnel Board appeals process.

"EEO Legal Updates: 
What Did the Court Decide?"

This General Session, "EEOC Legal Updates:  What did the Courts Decide," will provide an interactive review of recent employment discrimination cases based on race, sex, religion, age, national origin and disability.  Mr. Brown will discuss the current status of the laws on employment discrimination as it relates to the federally protected classes.


BIO: 
Kenneth W. Brown is the Senior Trial Attorney with the Louisville Area Office of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  His practice concentrates on litigating civil rights claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.  From 2002 to 2009, Mr. Brown was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law where he taught Advanced Trial Practice.  From 1996 to 2001, Mr. Brown was a member of the Tort and Insurance Group for the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs in Louisville.  He is a member of the Kentucky, Louisville and American Bar Associations and past President of the Louisville Black Lawyers Association.  Mr. Brown received his B.S.B.A. Degree (high honors) from the University of Louisville School of Business in 1993 where he was named a Wall Street Journal Outstanding Student, and his J.D. Degree from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1996.  Mr. Brown has served a number of civic organizations including Brooklawn Child and Family Services and has coached the Central High School Moot Court Team.
